A visit to Costa Cálida

For most people, a holiday is for relaxing, for getting away from it all, from the stress of the office or from smog-filled streets. Lying on a towel on the beach, taking deep breaths of clean, sea air or just looking at the people who are doing the same is a good way of relaxing. Another way of relaxing is just walking among wonderful scenery, among green vegetation with a backdrop of a tall mountain in the distance. The beaches of Spain's Mediterranean have all of these possibilities where you can experience these varieties of relaxation. Costa Cálida is one such place.

The Warm Coast
As its name indicates, it is a part of the warm and sunny Mediterranean coast. Located next to the province of Murcia, it is a long expanse of sandy beach, beautifully maintained and spotless. In the distance you can see the nearby mountain that looks down onto the beach and out to sea. If you prefer to just sit back and look at the beautiful scenery of white sandy beach, blue Mediterranean and even bluer skies while feeling the cool sea breezes that refresh and invigorate, then you should take a walk on the nearby mountain.

Local Produce
The inhabitants of Costa Cálida grow vegetables, fruits and other produce in the fertile mountain soil. The nearby sea has valuable stocks of fish that local fishermen catch and sell to the restaurants that cater to the many tourists. They are drawn to Costa Cálida by the great combination of beaches, sea and mountains and also by the seafood that is always fresh in the local restaurants.

The Museum
One place that you should not miss is the local museum. It has many artifacts from Roman and pre-Roman times that have been carefully preserved and put on display. The highlight is the almost complete Roman Theater that has been painstakingly restored. Some of the props used in the theater, items of decoration for the theater itself and even a part of the stage where the performers tried to win applause from the Roman audience can be admired by modern tourists.

Costa Cálida is not as famous as the other resorts that dot the Mediterranean coast but it has its charm, as the yearly influx of tourists indicates. They are drawn by the quiet beauty of the place, by the winning combination of sea and mountain and also by the possibility of having a real vacation in an unforgettable place.

If we look into the development and history of the music in Spain, then it is very clear that this music is highly influenced by the Moors, Greeks and Romans. Some places of interest for tourists in Spain - La Mezquita

Spain has several churches, cathedrals and other monuments of historical importance. But La Mezquita is something different. It is a symbol of harmony between two religions, namely the Christians and the Muslims. Several architects and sculptors have put their minds together in constructing this great piece of work. This is one of the most outstanding architectural works ever created in Europe.

La Mezquita, a mosque which was later converted into a cathedral is located in the province of Cordoba. This mosque was constructed in the 10th century by Abd ar-Rahman. This mosque has a rarest combination of Gothic, Roman, Syrian, Byzantine and Persian architectural design. Some changes are believed to have been made in its design in later years. The horseshoe type arch supported by 850 pillars gives some distinctiveness to the design. Each of the pillars has intricate work of artifacts and sculpture. Each of the pillars has granite and marble coverings. There are thousands of oil lamps which are lit in the night and this presents a most wonderful look in the dark of the night. It is designed in such a way that the huge prayer hall receives abundant air and light throughout the year.

Some festivals of Muslim faith are also held here which shows the unity of people belonging to these religions.

Later in the year 1236, the mosque was consecrated as a cathedral. Thereafter in the 14th century, a royal chapel was also built. Some alterations were made to suit the cathedral. Some of the beautiful paintings of renowned artists found their way inside the chapel. The other alterations include installation of life size bull and lion carved out of mahogany and an eagle carved out of black marble. Duque Correjo made a choir stall in baroque mahogany. That was in the 18th Century.

The bell tower was installed at a height of 93 meters. Provision has been made to reach the bell tower so that the visitors can have a magnificent view of Cordoba and its neighboring places. The Moorish designed gates have been retained with some minor modifications.

It is a wonderful place to visit. The entire structure is stunningly beautiful. The aesthetic beauty of this chapel coupled with very well planned interiors makes this building a never to miss tourist spot during the visit to Spain. In fact this is one of the chapels which receive the highest number of visitors.

Popular places of visit in Spain

A brief introduction to some of the places of interest in Spain is provided here:

Saville Gate:

This is not just a gate to control inflow and outflow of people or traffic. This gate installed in the 10th century has great historical importance. Some Spanish people also attach some religious importance to this gate. The sculpture of ‘los enamorados’ has been installed near the gate. The sculpture depicts a pair of lovers who are trying to reach the other’s hand. According to history, the sculpture is that of the great Moorish poet Ibn Zaydun and that of his heart throb princess Wallada. Incidentally, Wallada herself was a poetess of fame. During the 15th century, Christians put up the hedges to the gate. The hedges gave a new look to the gate and now it looks just marvelous. Needless to say that when you visit Saville, never miss this historic gate.

The Roman Bridge:

Like the Saville Gate, even this bridge has some religious value for some Spanish people. The bridge is constructed across the great river Guadalquivir. It is believed to have been used by the King Augusta to travel from Rome to Cadiz. The bridge is actually located in the Cordoba province. The bridge has 16 arches. Incidentally people say that the arches were built only at a later period and they were not a part of the original construction of the bridge. But historians contradict this to say that the first arch was constructed by Heman Ruiz III to celebrate his victory in a war. Thereafter several arches were built by subsequent kings or conquerors.

It is also believed that the bridge was renovated by the Moors and thereafter it underwent several renovations and repairs; latest being in the year 2006. In the middle of the bridge there is a statue of St. Raphael and here many people burn candles as a gesture of respect to the saint. It is believed a French fisherman is responsible for building this statue.

The bridge measures about 225 meters. At the end of the bridge, the famous Calahorra tower has been built by Moors. This is actually a defense tower. It was Phillip II, the first recognized king of Spain who built a gate for the bridge. This gate is called the Puerto Del Puente. It was constructed on the northern side of the bridge. Historians say that this gate was built in 1570.

Spend your leisure time on an island where everything around you is beautiful. If you want the vast sand, crystal clear sea water, beautiful nature around, enough avenues for water sports, places to dine and chat savoring the tasty traditional food and tasty wine; then just go to Palma de Mallorca. This is an island of the Mallorca province. Remember, this beautiful island has many more things to offer; beautiful coves, cathedrals, places to play and what not.

Let us just start our tour immediately. We are now in Placa d’Espanya. Oh! This is not a park. This is the Palma’s transport hub. Here you are connected by bus and trains. The two old buildings you see on either side are the café and the tourist information centre. There are large escalators. Just down below the lawn is the railway station. Of course the bus station is partially operational and it will be fully functional in just a short period of time.

Now we are in La Seu cathedral. The mosque which then existed in the place was converted to a cathedral in the year 1229 but unfortunately the work could not be completed till 1601. It was Gaudi who made some alterations and gave the cathedral the beautiful look which it has today. The park located near the cathedral has foundation stone of the city. In between these two, walls have been constructed which are called as ‘Town walls’. The town walls have a huge canopy which is decorated with blue and yellow diamonds. Perhaps one would feel a dearth of words to explain the beauty of this canopy.

Now we are in the old city. There is an adage ‘old is gold’; that is certainly true of Palma. As you drive across the old city, you will find beautiful buildings and arches on either side of the beautifully laid out roads. It is a pleasure to drive on these roads and a pleasure to watch these buildings. These buildings have diverse architectural beauty. The old city also has some ancient cathedrals, convents, parks, etc.

Now we are in the area where some of the monuments belonging to Moorish period have been preserved. The Arab bath for example, attracts a large number of visitors. There is a beautiful garden just by the side of the Arab bath. This Arab bath seems to have been planned very well. Enough space has been provided for light and air. Historians say that this Arab bath has been built in the 11th century.

Some of the renowned parks in Spain are briefly explained here:

Guell Park:

When we speak of parks, the first name which comes out is Guell Park. This park is the brain child of the genius architect of Spain Antanio Gaudi. There is an old adage ‘where there is a will, there is a way’ and Gaudi proved it. It was actually a place identified for a housing colony. The rocky area was converted to a park because the proposed housing colony failed to make a start. This beautiful park has been declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO. There are critics who call this park an ‘Outrageous modernism’. There are some who praise it because Gaudi has successfully redefined the concept of a ‘park’. It has beautiful works of sculpture by some of the renowned artists.

De la Ciudadella Park:

This is again a brain child of Antano Gaudi in the Barri Gotic region of Spain. This park has a great history. Actually it was a fortress built by King Felipe V in the year 1715. The fortress was built in the shape of a Star. Later Napoleon used it as a prison. Later in the year 1878, it was General Prim who completely destroyed the Citadel and in its place a statue of Genera Prim was installed. Later it was converted into a park by the Spanish Government. This huge park is considered as one of the best parks of Spain. It also has some monuments which are of historic importance.

There is also a museum inside the park. The park has a big lake and one can hire a boat. The garden section of the park has varieties of plants which are of interest for every visitor to the park. Universal exhibition was held in the year 1888 in this park. For purpose of the exhibition, many buildings were constructed. The interesting feature of this park is that the government of Spain has preserved all the historic buildings that were constructed in this park. This park has been appreciated by all the people. Most of the buildings in this park are in typical Spanish architecture. The park has many works of sculpture.

The building built in Romanesque architecture was the place where the king and other royal family of Navarre lived. According to historians, the royal family lived in the palace from 12th century to 15th century. It would also mean that the palace was built in the 12th century. Because of the age of the building, a part of the palace had caved in and it was rebuilt in the year 1991. This rectangular shaped building was extended with additional floors during the 16th century. The tower of the palace has three floors. Although some portion of the walls has lost its charm due to the age of the building, some other portions are preserved using some of the modern technologies.
